The BCS exam

BCS (Bangladesh Civil Service) is the Public Service Commission's (PSC) competitive exam for grade 9 officer posts in cadres such as administration, police, foreign affairs, education, health and agriculture. It has three stages: preliminary, written and viva. Candidates who pass the written and viva but miss a cadre can still be recommended for non-cadre posts.

Age limit
21–32 for everyone; the circular names the date age is counted on
Education
A 4-year honours degree, or a 3-year degree plus a master's; technical cadres need the specific degree (e.g. MBBS)
Fee
Tk 200 (Tk 50 for ethnic minority, disabled and third-gender candidates), plus a Tk 5 charge
Apply at
bpsc.teletalk.com.bd; fee by SMS from a Teletalk prepaid number within 72 hours
How often
PSC target: a general BCS circular every November, results within a year
Total marks
Written 900 + viva 100 = 1,000 (preliminary marks are not added)
Cadres
26 cadres at present
Latest
50th BCS (2,150 posts): viva stage; 51st (special, health, 5,000 posts): applications closed; the 52nd general BCS circular is expected in November 2026

Exam stages

  1. 1Preliminary (screening)200 marks · 2 hours

200 MCQs: +1 for each right answer, −0.5 for each wrong one. The pass mark is set by the PSC each time. It only screens for the written exam and does not count in the final result. Subject marks from the 50th BCS:

    SubjectMarks
    Bangla language & literature30
    English language & literature30
    Bangladesh affairs25
    International affairs25
    Mathematical reasoning20
    General science15
    Computer & ICT15
    Mental ability15
    Ethics, values & good governance15
    Geography, environment & disaster management10
  2. 2Written exam900 marks

General cadres: Bangla 200, English 200, Bangladesh affairs 200, International affairs 100, Math reasoning 50 and Mental ability 50, General science 60 + Computer 25 + ICT 15. Technical/professional cadres: Bangla 100, English 200, Bangladesh affairs 200, International 100, Math reasoning and mental ability 100, and post-related subjects 200. Pass: 50% on average; a paper below 30% counts as zero.

  3. 3Viva100 marks

From the 47th BCS the viva is 100 marks (was 200); pass mark 50. Written-qualified candidates give their cadre preference online before the viva. Viva boards are now chosen by lottery.

  4. 4Medical, police verification and gazette

After the PSC's recommendation come the medical board and police/intelligence verification; then the Ministry of Public Administration publishes the gazette. This step can take months.

What to study

  • For the preliminary, solve past BCS papers again and again; similar questions keep returning.
  • Bangla and English carry 60 marks together: steady grammar and literature reading pays off most.
  • Read a newspaper daily for Bangladesh and international affairs: the constitution, the Liberation War, the economy and current events matter.
  • Math and mental ability come with practice; do a few problems every day.
  • The written exam rewards speed and well-organised answers; keep writing practice going from the preliminary stage.

Good to know

  • Quota: 93% merit; 5% children of freedom fighters/martyrs/Birangonas, 1% ethnic minorities, 1% disabled and third gender. Unfilled quota posts go to merit.
  • You can edit the application until you pay the fee, not after.
  • Special BCS rounds (e.g. 48th, 49th, 51st) are for one cadre: a 200-mark MCQ written test and a 100-mark viva, with no descriptive written exam.
  • In practice, circular to final result has taken one to two years (the 47th: about 19 months).

PSC non-cadre recruitment (grades 9–12)

The PSC recommends people for non-cadre posts in two ways: (1) BCS candidates who passed the written and viva but did not get a cadre, by merit and preference; and (2) separate non-cadre circulars for specific posts. In both cases the posts are usually grades 9–12.

Age limit
Usually 18–32 (check the circular)
Fee
Grades 9 and 10 Tk 200, grade 11 Tk 150, disadvantaged groups Tk 50; separate fee for each post
Apply at
BPSC non-cadre form (Form-5-A) on Teletalk
From BCS
Example: 4,136 people were recommended for non-cadre posts from the 44th BCS

Exam stages

  1. 1Preliminary (if many applicants)100 marks · 1 hour

Usually held when there are over 1,000 applicants; MCQ with −0.5 for wrong answers. General posts: Bangla, English, general knowledge, and math & everyday science, 25 each.

  2. 2Written exam200 marks

General posts: Bangla 50, English 50, general knowledge 40, math & mental ability 60. Technical posts give more marks to the subject.

  3. 3Viva50–100 marks

Usually 100 for grade 9 and 50 for grades 10–11.

Good to know

  • The marks breakdown was last published in detail in 2022; check each circular and syllabus.
  • A non-cadre recommendation is not a guaranteed job; the appointing ministry checks documents, health and background.
  • Most grade 11–20 posts are filled by the ministry or office itself, not the PSC (see "Other government jobs").

How to apply on Teletalk

Most government jobs are applied for online, on each office's own Teletalk site (e.g. bpsc.teletalk.com.bd, dpe.teletalk.com.bd). alljobs.teletalk.com.bd lists them all. Bank jobs use erecruitment.bb.org.bd.

  1. Read the circular

Check the post, eligibility, the date age is counted on, and the deadline. Every circular page on this site links the official PDF and the application site.

  2. Prepare photo and signature

Photo 300×300 pixels, up to 100 KB; signature 300×80 pixels, up to 60 KB. Also your NID or birth registration number and certificate details.

  3. Fill in the online form

Write your name, address and education exactly as on your certificates. Common mistakes: SSC details in the HSC fields, or the permanent address in place of the present one.

  4. Download the Applicant's Copy

After submitting you get an Applicant's Copy with a User ID and the payment instructions. Download or print it.

  5. Pay within 72 hours

Send two SMS to 16222 from a Teletalk prepaid number: the first with your User ID, the second with YES and the PIN. Copy the exact format from your Applicant's Copy. Unpaid applications are cancelled.

  6. Keep your User ID and password

After payment an SMS gives your password. You need both to download the admit card.

  7. Download the admit card

When the exam date is announced, download it from the same site with your User ID and password; you are also told by SMS on the mobile number you gave.

Frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for government jobs?

The maximum age for direct recruitment is 32 for everyone. A 2024 ordinance raised it from 30, and Parliament made it law on 5 April 2026. The minimum is usually 18 (21 for BCS). Where a body's own rules already allow more than 32, that higher limit stays.

On which date is age counted?

Each circular names a date, e.g. "18–32 on 1 May 2026". Your age must be within the limit on that date. Affidavits are not accepted as proof of age.

Is there an age relaxation for freedom fighters' children or disabled candidates?

The old extra two years ended in 2024; it is now 32 for all. A limit of 34 for doctors and disabled candidates was proposed but has not been confirmed as law; the 51st special BCS also says 32.

What is the quota in government jobs?

93% merit. The other 7%: 5% children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters and Birangonas, 1% ethnic minorities, 1% disabled and third gender. Unfilled quota posts go to merit. Women's, district and grandchildren quotas no longer exist.

Can I apply for several jobs?

Yes, nothing stops you applying to different circulars; each has its own fee. Many exams fall on the same day, so you may have to choose. Whether you can apply for more than one post in the same circular is stated in that circular.

How much is the fee? Is it refundable?

Since December 2024: grades 9–10 Tk 200, 11–12 Tk 150, 13–16 Tk 100, 17–20 Tk 50, plus the Teletalk charge (e.g. Tk 112 and Tk 56). BCS is Tk 200. Fees are generally not refundable.

Can I pay the fee by bKash or Nagad?

For Teletalk-site government jobs the fee is paid by SMS from a Teletalk prepaid number within 72 hours. Bank jobs (erecruitment.bb.org.bd) take mobile banking or Bangla QR. Never send money to anyone's personal number.

What size should the photo and signature be?

Photo 300×300 pixels, up to 100 KB; signature 300×80 pixels, up to 60 KB. For BCS the photo must be taken within the last three months.

Can final-year students or those awaiting results apply?

For BCS, yes, on conditions: if your final exams are over by the circular's deadline. Other jobs usually need the qualification by the deadline; follow the circular.

How many times can I sit the BCS?

The advisory council decided on a limit of four in 2024, but the December 2024 BCS rules amendment reportedly did not include an attempt limit. You can apply while within the age limit; any new rule will be in the circular.

Do I need a computer certificate?

Only if the circular asks for it. Typist and assistant posts usually ask for a typing speed (e.g. 20 words per minute in Bangla and English), tested in a practical exam.

What if I lose my User ID or password?

The application site or circular gives an SMS format for a lost User ID/password; send it to 16222 from a Teletalk number. Otherwise call the Teletalk helpline (121).

What if I lose my admit card?

Download it again from the same Teletalk site with your User ID and password. Admit cards are only issued online.

Someone promises a job for money. What do I do?

Nothing beyond the application fee is payable for a government job. Do not pay anyone; check the circular on the official website or in national newspapers, and report fraud attempts to the nearest police station.

What is the waiting list?

For grades 13–20, two people per post are kept on a waiting list for a year or until the next circular. If a selected candidate does not join, the next is called.

What happens after the final result?

Police/intelligence verification, a medical board, then joining on the date in the appointment letter. There is usually a two-year probation, which can be extended. Not joining on time can cancel the appointment.

Rules change often. Always read the official circular before applying; its terms are final. Spotted a mistake? contact@bdgovernmentjobs.com
