'The' article is used before:

প্রশ্নটা দেশের নামের আগে article the-এর নিয়ম। সাধারণত একক দেশের নামের আগে the বসে না: China, Indonesia, Malaysia।

কিন্তু যেসব নাম বহুবচন, মানে দ্বীপপুঞ্জ বা অনেক অংশ মিলে তৈরি, তাদের আগে the বসে। Philippines অনেক দ্বীপের সমষ্টি, তাই the Philippines, যেমন the Netherlands, the Maldives।

আরেকটি নিয়ম: নামে republic, kingdom, states, union থাকলেও the বসে, যেমন the United States, the United Kingdom।

ফাঁদ হলো Indonesia, কারণ এটাও দ্বীপদেশ। কিন্তু নামটা একবচন, তাই the বসে না।
