Neither ... nor দিয়ে দুটি subject যুক্ত হলে verb মেলে কাছের subject-এর সঙ্গে। একে বলে proximity rule।

এখানে কাছের subject হলো the teacher, যা singular। তাই verb হবে singular: was willing। Willing একটি adjective, তাই be verb-এর পরে বসে।

The students plural দেখে were willing বেছে নেওয়া প্রধান ফাঁদ। উল্টো ক্রমে লিখলে, Neither the teacher nor the students were willing, তখন were সঠিক হতো। Was will বা be willing ব্যাকরণগতভাবেই ভুল গঠন।
